There are two main types of newspaper: “broadsheets” and “tabloids”. Broadsheets are often larger than tabloids, and are “serious” newspapers. They present the news in detail, and do not have many stories about the private lives of famous people. Tabloids, on the other hand, are much more interested in news and scandals involving stars than they are in serious news. They often have very big headlines, particularly on the front page, and have lots more photographs.

What’s the best age for a child to learn how to read? Some people believe that children should learn at as young an age as possible. Because of this, some parents start teaching their children when they are about three years old. Other people believe it’s better for a teacher at school to teach a class of children how to read, so many children don’t learn to read until they are five or six years old.

In most countries, you are only allowed to drive a car on a public road if you have a driving licence. You usually have to pass a driving test in order to get the licence. In European countries, this test is in two parts. The first part is a “theory” test. You have to answer questions about road safety. The second part is a “practical” test. You are in a car with an examiner, who tells you where to drive and asks you to do various things, such as parking or reversing around a corner.

The Americans, like the British, prefer travelling by car. American families often have two cars and many high school students drive themselves to school.
In large cities such as Boston, New York and Washington DC public transport is very good. There are overhead and underground rail systems and a regular bus service. In the countryside, Americans prefer to use their cars to get around because they often have to drive along distance to get to school or work.
When visiting friends or relatives in another state, Americans usually prefer to travel by aeroplane. This is because the USA is so huge that it can take many days to travel by road or rail.

Ludwig van Beethoven was born in 1770 in Bonn, Germany. He was the eldest of three boys. His father and grandfather were musicians.
Ludwig started learning the violin and piano at a very early age. In 1783 his first composition was published. When he was 17, he travelled to Vienna to study under Mozart. But soon he returned to Bonn because of his mother’s illness. In 1795 he gave his first performance as a pianist. It was a success. In the late 1790s, Beethoven began to lose his hearing and by 1819 he was completely deaf. It was during this period that he wrote some of his most famous compositions like ‘Moonlight’ (1801), ‘Pastoral’ (1808). After he became deaf, he continued to compose great music. In his later years, he was lonely, depressed and didn’t write much.
Beethoven died on March 26, 1827 in Vienna. More than 10, 000 people came to his funeral.
Beethoven was the first composer who used music to express deep feelings and ideas. Even today he is, for many people, the greatest composer ever.

I earn some extra money on the weekend by cleaning cars at the local garage. The garage owner is the friend of my dad. I clean the cars which he has for sale on the forecourt. He wants them to look as smart as possible so he can get the best price. The work isn’t very interesting, but it’s quite well-paid. I can usually earn up to thirty pounds, if I work hard – I get paid for each car I clean.

Visiting the USA has become easier recently. People who live in Argentina, Australia, Britain, Canada, Japan, Singapore, Uruguay and most European countries do not need a visa to visit the USA. They can visit for 90 days or less. All they need is a current passport and a return ticket.
Other visitors need a visa which they can apply for at the American Consulate or Embassy in their own country. This is a slightly more complicated procedure, but not too difficult.

In Britain the most popular form of transport is the car. People use it everyday to get to work, go to the supermarket and take the children to and from school.
However, in a busy city centre, where there are not many parking spaces, people prefer to use public transport such as taxis, buses and trains. In London the Underground is the fastest and most convenient way of getting around.
In the countryside things are not quite the same. People travel by car everywhere as buses and trains are not very frequent.
